Vagabond The basic plotline of Vagabond is very basic: girl runs away, girl runs into trouble, girl dies. But underneath this basic plot structure we see the story of something missing from most of our lives: meaning. The film explores an anti-socialized and confused girl who goes from one problem to the next in a search for herself. At times it is apparent that she just doesn't care about life or herself. She's a wandering fool who is searching for freedom of her soul but actually only making her soul a prisoner in the little world which she imagines is good enough for her. She's a very confused girl and could do something about her life, and she tries to act like she doesn't care, but as the viewer it is apparent she does. A sheep-herder who befriends the girl is sickened by the wandering girl's actions. He sums up her journey in probably the best quote of the move by saying what she is doing is "not wandering, but withering." But I found her useless journey is what made the film tick, and stuck with me after viewing it. The audience knows she dies in the end from the beginning, but it's an interesting journey. The film does a good job of exploring a theme of personal freedom, which can turn out to be a peculair subject, especially when it's you questioning your own. |
